Planet X: 30 Years in the Saddle

Mar 7, 2023 Planet X

When Planet X first got started, the world was a very different place. The charts were populated by the likes of George Michael and Billy Ocean, the Euros were being held in West Germany, and Margaret Thatcher was Prime Minister. Fast forward 30 years and the radio is playing George Ezra and Billie Eilish, the country’s gearing up for the Euros in Germany, and Rishi Sunak is in office.

Okay, maybe things aren’t that different after all, but the last few decades have seen some big changes in the world of cycling. 30 years ago, the idea of the Tour de France starting in Leeds might have seemed ludicrous, given that the race had never before started in the United Kingdom. However, it was a huge success back in 2014 - and it’s not the only change that’s been for the better.

Where it all began

Way back in 1988, Planet X was founded in the steel city of Sheffield by and for cycling enthusiasts. We were frustrated by the way extortionate gear costs were pricing otherwise devoted cyclists out of the game - making cycling a hobby only for the wealthy - so we decided to do something about it. And thus, Planet X was born.
Admittedly, the ideals that make Planet X the bike experts you know and love haven’t changed much since then. Planet X was founded with the mandate to make pro-level cycling accessible to all via great quality gear and affordable prices, and we’re proud to say we’ve never stopped. What has changed is how we do it.
Over the years, as the company grew, we’ve been able to improve our offering to make ourselves a one stop shop for all your cycling needs. Now we offer a range of high quality products and services, from pro-level bikes and gear to custom bike building and live video support. Since our humble beginnings in 1988, we’ve partnered with an assortment of the best brands in the cycling industry to bring you better quality at a lower price. These include:

Carnac

Selcof

Jobsworth

Zastrugi

On top of that, we’ve also worked hard on developing our own gear with our home brands - Planet X, On One, Holdsworth and Titus. No matter what you need, we’ve got you covered.

Where we are now

In slightly more recent years, there have been further developments. In 2020, when the world had shut down around us, we made the decision to become an employee-owned company. Each and every one of our employees has a driving motivation to steer Planet X toward even loftier heights, providing pro-level cycling gear to as many keen cyclists as possible.
We also partner with a number of cycle to work schemes to help make cycling a more accessible option for your daily commute. And the cyclescheme isn’t limited to just bikes - you can save money on all kinds of cycling accessories in order to get properly kitted out for your ride.
Now it’s time to look ahead to what the future holds for Planet X. We’re committed to improving our services even further to give our customers the very best experience when buying bikes and cycling accessories, so why not check out our range today?
